Drive DeVilbiss Healthcare

Cleaning & Disinfecting Guidelines

The recent outbreak of the COVID-19 human coronavirus has generated questions regarding appropriate cleaning and disinfection of Drive DeVilbiss Healthcare products that are being used/re-deployed between patients. The purpose of this Bulletin is to provide guidelines for the cleaning and disinfection of the Drive DeVilbiss Healthcare product category listed below.

The procedures and guidelines provided in this Bulletin are intended to be used in conjunction with emerging infection control and universal precaution policies. Consider all applicable facility and institutional protocols as well as any other federal, state or local infection control policy.

hand on cloth

Cleaning

Prior to disinfecting, do a cleaning step to remove visible surface soil, bodily fluids, etc. A mild soap or detergent solution made with warm water is recommended for most materials. Rinse soap/ detergent residue by wiping with plain potable (suitable for drinking) water. Dry surfaces by wiping with a clean dry wipe or cloth.

spray bottles

Disinfection

Use the disinfectant recommended in the user manual for the type of surface and material (hard nonporous, powder-coated, metal, fibrous, foam, wood, cloth, epoxy, etc.)

The use of 1:10 bleach solution (sodium hypochlorite) is a highly effective and efficient surface disinfectant. Use of bleach may result in discoloration or degradation of some materials.

EPA-registered commercial disinfectants in the format of solutions, wipes, and spray are effective surface disinfectants when used per label directions. Examples include bleach and quaternary ammonium compound disinfectants. Global commercial brands include Lysol® and Clorox® (home and Institutional use); PDI® (healthcare setting); Sani-Professional® (food service and janitorial setting).

washing hands

Sanitization

Hand hygiene is of critical importance throughout these processes. Wash hands with soap and water using the CDC-recommended procedure. When soap and water are not available, or to sanitize hands (gloved or ungloved) between washings, the use of a 70% -90% (Isopropyl) Alcohol rub is recommended. Hand sanitizing wipes may also be used.

ppe mask

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

For hospital and institutional settings, follow all facility-specified procedures for PPE. The video at the link below provides the current standard.

https://www.vumedi.com/video/ppe-donning-and-doffing-cdc-sequence-for-covid-19/

For the homecare setting, wear gloves, mask, gown or apron, and safety glasses or face shield if available. Tie hair back and cover. Wear non-porous, cleanable shoes or boots.

Don PPE and prepare the area, including hand hygiene and waste disposal, before prepping solutions, cleaning, and disinfecting surfaces. Upon donning PPE, do not touch your face or eyes further.

cycle

Post-Disinfection

Discard all used cloths and other waste into appropriate waste receptacles (e.g., biohazard container/bag) with correct labelling.

NOTE: Place items to be laundered into an impermeable, labeled laundry bag. Using Universal precautions, launder items using the recommended detergent and warmest appropriate water setting for the items. Dry items completely.

Sanitize gloved hands.

Remove Personal Protective Equipment in the order recommended by the CDC.

https://www.vumedi.com/video/ppe-donning-and-doffing-cdc-sequence-for-covid-19/

Any disposable PPE or items that cannot be disinfected must be discarded into the appropriate waste receptacle.

NOTE: If reusable gloves are used, those gloves must be dedicated for cleaning and disinfection of surfaces for COVID-19 and should not be used for other purposes. Gloves must be washed and sanitized.

Wash hands, wrists, other areas in accordance with Universal precautions and procedures.

https://www.cdc.gov/handwashing/when-how-handwashing.html

If the same person is responsible for reassembly, that person must don new/disinfected PPE (including footwear) to handle the clean equipment.

Preparation

Prepare areas for cleaning and conduct pre-disinfection cleaning

  • Remove and discard clutter; identify any loose or missing hardware.
  • Disconnect power sources where applicable.
  • Cover electrical outlets where appropriate.
  • Prepare cleaning solutions according to instructions.
  • Inspect cleaning equipment and replace as required.
  • Set up stations, including hand sanitizing, extra gloves, spill response, and waste disposal.
  • Put up any signs, restrict area.
  • For parts, prepare areas for dirty and clean staging.
cloth

Cleaning

Clean the exterior of the concentrator with a clean lint free cloth. Heavy soil should be removed with a clean lint free cloth dampened with water. A soft bristled brush dampened with water can be used to remove stubborn soil. Dry the concentrator using a clean lint free cloth if water was used to remove soil.

sprays

Disinfecting

Disinfect in a well-ventilated area away from environmental contaminants.

bucket

Use of Prepared Solutions

Use 5.25% chlorine bleach (Clorox Regular Liquid Bleach or equivalent). Mix one (1) part bleach with four (4) parts water in an appropriate clean container. This ratio produces a one (1) part bleach to five (5) total parts solution (1:5). The total volume (amount) of solution required is determined by the number of concentrators in need of disinfection.

Apply the bleach solution to all exterior surfaces of the concentrator using a clean lint free cloth in an even manner. The cloth should be dampened only and not dripping of solution. Do not use a spray bottle to apply the solution. Do not saturate the device with the solution. Take care that no solution enters the vent areas on the concentrator base or the Auxiliary O2 fitting area on the back of the unit. Avoid over‐saturating the cabinet seams so that no solution residue builds up in these areas. Avoid the caster wells located on the bottom of the unit.

Exposure time of the disinfectant solution should be 10 minutes minimum to 15 minutes maximum. After the recommended exposure time, all exterior surfaces of the Concentrator should be wiped with a clean lint free cloth dampened with potable water no warmer than room temperature. Dry the unit with a dry, clean lint free cloth. This is to remove residue that may stain or leave a film on the unit, especially after repeated disinfections.

Definitions

  1. Cleaning refers to the removal of dirt and impurities, including germs, from surfaces. Cleaning alone does not kill germs. But by removing the germs, it decreases their number and therefore any risk of spreading infection.
  2. Disinfecting works by using chemicals to kill germs on surfaces. This process does not necessarily clean dirty surfaces or remove germs. But killing germs remaining on a surface after cleaning further reduces any risk of spreading infection.
  3. Universal Precaution: A method of infection control in which blood, certain body fluids, fresh tissues, cells of human origin, and other potentially infectious materials are handled as if they are known to be infected with HIV, HBV, and/ or other blood-borne pathogens.
  4. Exposure Incident: A specific eye, mouth, other mucous membrane, non-intact skin or parenteral contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials that result from the performance of an employee’s duties.
